Exercise 1.4: Lines and Edges

The aim of this exercise is to further develop observation and recording skills (focusing on different qualities of lines) and to begin to build an experimental approach to drawing.

The Paisley Coat in lines:

Clockwise from top left:

  1. Brushpens on A4 cartridge paper (button loop) focusing on texture of weave and braided loop.
  2. coat outline drawn with eyes closed in pencil on A4 cartridge paper
  3. loop for inside tie using minimal pencil marks on A4 cartridge paper
  4. section of paisley pattern (pencil on A4 cartridge paper) focusing on colour changes within the weaving
  5. paisley pattern near button loop drawn with eyes closed (pencil on A4 paper)

The Straw Hat in lines:

6. continuous line drawing in pencil on A4 cartridge paper
7. drawing in pencil on A4 cartridge paper using non-dominant left hand

The Suede Shoes in lines:

8. continuous line drawing on A3 cartridge paper
9. line drawing on A3 cartridge paper focusing on the contours of the design printed on the suede. Dotted lines to represent the stitching on the leather.

Reflections:

I admittedly do have a tendency to work on A4 or A3 for sketching. I find these two sizes the most practical for storage etc but will obtain/make bigger paper for experimenting. I have tried to be more confident in my mark making and banned myself from rubbing out mistakes so that I would carry on.
