Assignment Three: Reflections

I have been surprised by how much I have learnt from the colour studies section of this course. Initially I wasn’t very confident in my ability to mix colours and decided to create swatches of each of the colours that I owned (in both gouache and watercolour paints). This allowed me to play with colour mixing and gain confidence before moving on to creating the colour chips required in the exercises. Exercise 3.3 Watercolour Studies seemed odd at first however once I had started creating the stripe patterns I was inspired to use this technique again in future to create colour combinations that I may not think of otherwise.

I found being able to review the work from the entire section useful when creating my colour resource book. Although the exercises were very different I did notice that certain colours (such as the dusky pink and teal) seemed to recur. I decided to take influences from the various exercises when creating the book and reworked the ‘simple’ collage into a simple stripe pattern which unified it better with the preceding section. I also added a yarn wrap to the watercolour studies section as the colour palette developed and tried to continue the dominant colour themes from the contents onto a hand-dyed cotton fabric which I then used to cover my book.

I feel that my collage skills are weak however I can see the benefit of working on this in future as it is a good way to focus on aspects of composition. Out of the skills listed in the assessment criteria, design and compositional skill is the one I need to work on most however I am hoping that this will improve with practice.

Review of assessment criteria

Demonstration of technical and visual skills– materials, techniques, observational skills, visual awareness, design and compositional skill (40%)

It can be seen from my blog and sketchbook that initially my skills with gouache were very limited but I feel that by the end of part two of exercise 3.1 I was able to extend the design of my patterned fabric to a higher standard than I initially expected. I still feel my design and compositional skills need work and I will try to focus on these for the rest of the course.

Quality of outcome– content, application of knowledge, presentation of work in a coherent manner, discernment, conceptualisation of thoughts, communication of ideas (20%)

It was noted in my feedback from Part Two that the presentation of my physical work was not to the same standard as that of my blog. In an attempt to rectify this I have started to collate extra work in a sketchbook complete with associated notes, offcuts and experiments. I also decided to learn Japanese stab binding as a technique to create my colour resource book and created hand-dyed cotton fabric to cover my book to unify the work contained.

Demonstration of creativity– imagination, experimentation, invention, development of a personal voice (20%)

I feel that the colour resource book demonstrates a much stronger ‘personal voice’ than the pieces submitted for assignment two. Although it initially appeared that the exercises as part of Colour Studies were very different, on reflection many of my colour choices seemed to recur throughout my coursework and I decided to embrace this, particularly in the decision to attempt to ice dye cotton fabric in a similar colour palette.

Reading Rebecca Farley’s OCA blog post on The Question of Development I realised that my approach to creating this book was much more an exercise of development than the one used for Assignment Two. I tried to respond to and develop the work in front of me rather than have too clear an idea of what I was trying to achieve beforehand. I do feel that I could benefit from spending a little more time researching other artists and will try to focus on that in the next section.
